University lounges offer free haircuts and relaxation sessions
People with mental health issues are offered free “pampering” sessions at a college hair and beauty salon. Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group staff and students have partnered with North Staffs Mind to provide the free cut and blow-dry treatments.
These ‘pick me up’ sessions will be available to users of the charity’s services at the Newcastle and Stafford campus trade shows. Speaker Rachael White said, “We believe wellness is at the heart of everyone’s health and happiness.
“Every picture seen on social media or in a magazine has the ability to change your mood and the way you feel. Your hairstyle and how you feel about it is one of the many factors that can change your mood quite instantly. “

The college also plans to offer personal care services in the future that support people with mental health issues. “Caregivers can sometimes be overlooked,” Rachel added.
“However, we know they do a fantastic job and we hope to extend the current promotion to provide relaxing treatments in our beauty salon at the academy, to help them relax and unwind too.”
Kate Boundy, CEO of North Staffs Mind, said: “We are really excited about this positive and innovative new partnership project. We are constantly looking for new ways to work within our local community to raise mental health awareness and improve the mental well-being of our members.
“The demand for services has never been higher as the pandemic continues to affect us all.”
