What if…? The season finale offered colorful Easter eggs, including glimpses of what could happen with these Variant heroes.

The first season of the first animated series from Marvel Studios, What if…? concluded, and did it dramatically. As an Ultron (voiced by Ross Marquand) imbued with the Infinity Stones threatened to destroy all existence, the Watcher (Jeffery Wright) set aside his hands-off observations and storytelling to bring together the heroes of the season’s previous episodes for a epic showdown. Which means to fully appreciate and appreciate “What if … The watcher breaks his oath?” You probably shouldn’t have skipped an episode like you would any other anthology series.

Going back to previous episodes and characters also means more Marvel-related Easter Eggs. Some of them involved new versions of old Marvel Studios releases. Others have referred to comics and previous episodes. And one in particular hinted at an episode we’ve never had the chance to see… yet. So let us venture once more into the worlds of What if…? to see what the finale gave us who are looking for every clue inside these Marvel Studios Disney Plus shows (SPOILERS,of course) with our first stop being …

Captain Carter: The Winter Soldier

Just like the first season of What if…? started with Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), “What if… the Watcher breaks his oath?” also begins with Captain Carter. And just like “What if… Captain Carter was the first avenger?” repeats Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) with Peggy reprising the role of Steve, the beginning of this episode tells Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), in particular the SHIELD counterterrorism raid on the high seas.

In fact, this episode takes it a step further by substituting Peggy for Steve. His suit and shield follow the same design aesthetic as Steve’s suit and shield. Winter Soldier, to the bottom of the all-silver emblem. The dialogue between Peggy and Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo) during the mission briefing is virtually identical to the exchange between Steve and Rumlow. Ditto for the dialogue between Peggy and Black Widow (voiced by Lake Bell) about the dance talk, except he’s a guy representing Peggy instead of a statistics girl for Steve. Natasha even has the same hairstyle as in Winter Soldier, to start.

Finally, in keeping with the rest of the re-imagination The Winter Soldier with Peggy instead of Steve, she also dives into the ocean like him, and fights with Batroc (Georges St-Pierre). But the credits scene at the end of this episode also echoes a plot point from The Winter Soldier, also, which we will save for later.
