Cillian Murphy reveals how he handles Tommy Shelby’s haircut on BBC Peaky Blinders

The secret to maintaining the famous Tommy Shelby haircut has been revealed – by the star who brings Peaky Blinders tough man to life.

Ahead of the long-awaited final season’s return this weekend, Cillian Murphy – who plays the series’ protagonist – shared the grueling maintenance routine he goes through to maintain the 1920s style.

An exclusive preview of the series finale drew huge crowds to Cineworld Broad Street in Birmingham on Thursday February 24, where a few hundred lucky fans got to watch the first episode of series six before anyone else.

The show’s stars were on the red carpet downtown to celebrate the iconic moment. Star power ranged from the cast to the show’s directors, plus a slew of other famous faces. But there was no sign of Tommy Shelby. Instead, Murphy was in Mexico.

“Cillian is a lot warmer but is he happier,” series creator Steven Knight joked, referring to Murphy’s sunny spot as he shoots the new Oppenheimer movie.

In an interview with the BBC, Murphy said: “I get my hair cut every other day.

“It takes a lot to maintain it. When we saw it and that figure, with the suit and the cap and everything, it made sense.

“We tried to change it slightly every series to represent his state of mind. But it’s a gas that it’s become kind of a style thing.”

Last week, the long-awaited return date of Peaky Blinders was revealed on a striking mural in Birmingham depicting gang leader Shelby.

Murphy previously said the series would be a tribute to the late Helen McCrory after the actress, who played family matriarch Polly Gray for the previous five seasons, died of cancer in April 2021.

Peaky Blinders returns to BBC One and iPlayer for series six on February 27 at 9 p.m.
